But there is another spec that quietly decides how the unit installs, how loud it is, and even whether you can put it in a wall: the chassis. The chassis is the metal frame and cabinet that holds the working parts, and window units come in three main styles.

What the chassis actually is
The chassis is the housing that carries the compressor, the coils, the fan, and the controls. How it is built, and how it sheds the heat it pulls out of your room, is what sets the three types apart. Fixed units vent heat from the sides and back. Slide-out and U-shaped designs change that layout, and those changes are what open up wall installation or cut the noise.
Fixed chassis: the standard choice
The great majority of window air conditioners use a fixed chassis. The cabinet and the working parts are built as one sealed piece, so you lift the whole unit into the window and secure it. Because it vents heat from the sides and rear, a fixed-chassis unit needs open air on both sides, which means it belongs in a window and not in a wall. It is the lightest and least expensive design, and for cooling a single room it is usually all you need. Most units in the 5,000 to 12,000 BTU range are fixed chassis.
The trade-offs are simple. You handle the entire weight at once during install, and you cannot enclose the unit in a wall sleeve, since a wall would block the side airflow the unit depends on.
Slide-out chassis: heavier duty, sometimes through a wall
On a slide-out design, the inner chassis (the compressor, coils, and fan) slides out of a separate outer cabinet. You mount the empty cabinet in the opening first, then slide the working parts in, so you are handling two lighter pieces instead of one heavy box. This construction is common on larger, higher-capacity units.
The bigger advantage is placement. Because many slide-out units are built to vent heat from the rear rather than the sides, some are rated for through-the-wall installation with a proper wall sleeve. This is the key point to get right: only install a unit in a wall if the manufacturer specifically approves it for through-the-wall use. A wall blocks the side venting a normal window unit needs, so putting an unrated unit in a sleeve can cause it to overheat. Check the spec sheet before you commit to a wall opening.
U-shaped chassis: the quietest option
The U-shaped chassis is the newest design, and it looks the part. The body is shaped like a U, and the window sash lowers into the gap in the middle, so the glass ends up sitting between the indoor half of the unit and the outdoor compressor half. That closed window is what makes these units so quiet, since the glass separates you from the noisiest parts. Many run as low as the low 40s dBA, quiet enough for a bedroom. The design also lets you open the window above the unit whenever you want fresh air.
U-shaped units almost always use inverter compressors, which run at variable speed instead of cycling fully on and off. That tends to make them more efficient, and many models carry ENERGY STAR certification. They fit standard single-hung and double-hung windows, though you should confirm your window opens tall enough before buying. Like a fixed chassis, a U-shaped unit is a window-only design and is not meant for a wall.

Which chassis should you choose?
- Cooling one room on a budget: a fixed chassis is the simplest, most affordable pick and covers most needs.
- Bigger space, or you want it in a wall: look at a slide-out chassis, and confirm the exact model is rated for through-the-wall use before you cut anything.
- Bedroom or noise-sensitive room, and you want efficiency: a U-shaped unit is the quietest and often the most efficient, as long as your window suits it.
- No usable window at all: a portable unit that vents through a hose may fit better than any window chassis.
Whichever chassis you choose, get the capacity right first. An oversized unit short-cycles and leaves the room damp, and an undersized one never catches up.
