A whole-house fan is a large fan mounted in the ceiling of your top floor, usually in a central hallway, that vents into the attic. A properly sized unit can exchange the entire volume of air in a typical home every three to four minutes, so a house that felt stuffy at 8 p.m. can feel fresh within the hour. Do they actually cool the house?
They do, but only by bringing in cooler outside air, so timing is everything. Think of a whole-house fan as a tool for capturing cool air, not for manufacturing it. When conditions are right it can drop indoor temperatures several degrees within an hour.

How to size and install one safely
Whole-house fans are rated in CFM, the cubic feet of air they move per minute. A simple starting point is 2 to 3 CFM per square foot of living space, so multiplying your square footage by 3 gives a solid target. Two requirements matter as much as the fan you pick:
- Enough attic ventilation. The air the fan pushes up has to get back out. Plan on roughly 1 square foot of net free attic vent area for every 750 CFM of fan capacity. Too little venting chokes the fan and kills its performance.
- Open windows every time. Never run a whole-house fan with the house sealed. Without an inlet, it can depressurize the house and pull exhaust gases back down the flue of a gas water heater or furnace, a hazard called backdrafting. Open a few windows first, every single time.
Traditional vs modern insulated models
Older whole-house fans mount a big blade directly in the ceiling. They move a lot of air but can be loud, and their louvers leak heated air into the attic all winter unless you cover them. Newer insulated, ducted models sit up in the attic and connect to the ceiling through a self-sealing damper, so they run quieter and stop winter heat loss.
