Some air conditioners do not just cool. Flip a setting and the same unit warms the room, which turns a summer-only appliance into a year-round one you never have to haul to the closet in October. These heat-and-cool units are popular for bedrooms, home offices, additions, sunrooms, and garages, anywhere that needs a little of both without buying and storing two separate machines.
There is one thing worth understanding before you buy, because it decides how the unit performs in winter. Not all of these models heat the same way, and the method sets how cold it can get outside before the heat fades and how much that heat costs per hour. Here is how the two types work and how to choose.
The two ways an AC can heat
Every heat-and-cool unit falls into one of these camps, and the label on the box does not always make it obvious. Ask which one you are getting.
- Electric-resistance heat. A heating coil built into the unit, the same idea as a plug-in space heater. It works at any outdoor temperature because it makes its own heat instead of borrowing it, but it converts electricity to heat at roughly one to one, so it is the pricier way to stay warm. Best for taking the chill off, not for carrying a room through a cold winter.
- Heat pump (reverse cycle). The same refrigeration system that cools your room in July runs backward in winter, pulling heat out of the outdoor air and releasing it inside. Because it is moving heat rather than making it, a heat pump can deliver two to four units of warmth for every unit of electricity it draws. The tradeoff is that its output drops as the air outside gets colder, so the format you pick matters.

Match the unit to your climate and space
The format you choose usually decides the heating method, so start with where and how hard you need to heat.
- Window heat-and-cool units are the simplest single-room answer, and most of the heating ones use an electric coil. Great for knocking the chill off a bedroom or office in spring and fall.
- Portable heat-and-cool units roll from room to room and suit spaces where a window mount is not an option. Many use a heat pump for milder weather, some add an electric coil for colder days.
- Mini-split systems are the serious choice for real winter heating. A reverse-cycle heat pump handles one room or several, runs quietly, and cold-climate models keep making efficient heat well below freezing. This is the format to size up when heat is a main job, not an afterthought.
What to check before you buy
A few spec-sheet details separate a unit that carries a room through winter from one that only nibbles at the cold.
- The heating method. Confirm whether it is a heat pump or electric-resistance heat. If the listing just says “with heat,” ask. It is the single biggest factor in your winter power bill.
- Rated heating temperature range. A heat pump lists the outdoor low it can still heat at. If your winters dip below that number, you need a cold-climate model or electric backup.
- Efficiency ratings. For cooling, room units show a CEER value and many carry the ENERGY STAR label. For heat pumps, HSPF2 and COP describe heating efficiency. Higher is better on all of them.
- Electrical needs. Higher-capacity heat-and-cool units, especially larger window and PTAC models, often require a 230-volt outlet rather than a standard 115-volt one. Check before you commit.
- Safety certification. Look for a UL or ETL listing, the standard mark that the unit and its heating element were tested to a recognized safety standard.
Sizing still matters as much as it does for a cooling-only unit. A model that is too small runs nonstop and never catches up, while an oversized one short-cycles. If you are not sure of the BTUs your room needs, start there first.
